Involuntary reboot log 13.1

Sigh, not off to a great start with this machine. Hard reset because I go stuck at the lock screen and couldn’t log back into the account I had just stepped out of (the root account, because — again, sigh — I had to enable that because you can’t change the icon on your ~/Documents folder as a mere administrator 🤦) nor could I switch back to my normal account (which still had a running session in the background). Note that the only reason I’d tried to go back to the lock screen from the root session was because the Finder was beachballing and the Control Center was too (so I couldn’t access Fast User Switching from there). I have no idea how to switch to another account from the lock screen on Sonoma — it seems only to magically let me see the "other" user prompt intermittently, according to some magical criteria that I don’t understand.

Involuntary reboot log 12.5

Panic while the machine was unattended.

Despite this incident, the average time between failures for this machine is 170.6 days (up from 142), which is the best of any machine I’ve had since beginning to keep these records. (Technically, if I didn’t have so many keyboard problems — most of which were caused by my decision to use Karabiner-Elements — with my mid-2015 MacBook Pro, that one would probably be the most reliable.)

Involuntary reboot log 10.20

To celebrate the new year, a hard reset.

Machine didn’t wake from sleep on opening shell after a time away (screen was black, screen backlight was not on). Tried a few buttons and closing/re-opening, but in the end had to hold the power button down to hard reset.

I suspect a problem with the power supply. The battery is so weak now that even when at 80 or 90% it occasionally goes to sleep as though the battery were dead. Machine claims battery is at "58% health". Going to have to get it serviced soon, before Apple stops doing battery service on this model, but I don’t want to be without the machine for too long.

Despite this incident, the average time between failures for this machine is 94.4 days (up from 87.74), which isn’t bad at all.
